the Mughal Empire. You'll tour the area in a cycle rickshaw - one of
India's traditional forms of transportation. Near the fort you'll see
Chandni Chowk, the bustling and colorful market of the old city. At Raj
Ghat, the impressive and emotional memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, you'll stop
for a moment of reflection on this inspirational leader's life. The tour
then continues through New Delhi, designed and built by the British in the
1920s. Delhi's main avenue, the Rajpath, the India Gate and the imposing
Presidential Palace are on our route - also visit Qutab Minar and Emperor
Humayun's Tomb and gardens.
Day 03 - Travel to Agra (203 kms / 4 hrs. drive)
TToday drive to Agra, home to the incredible Taj Mahal. Upon arrival
you'll head directly to the Taj for a first look at this beautiful
structure. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan to honor his wife who had died in
childbirth, the Taj stands as a memorial of unmatched beauty. The hilltop
Agra Fort is also on today's tour and we see its lovely courtyards,
fountains, and gates before driving through the bustling city on the

Day 04 - Travel to Jaipur (232 kms / 5 hrs.)
Today, you'll see women dressed in brilliantly colored saris, decorated
elephants, camels and rural villages on the drive through the Rajasthani
countryside en-route to Jaipur. Stop and visit the perfectly preserved,
red sandstone "ghost town," Fatehpur Sikri. Evening free to
scroll through the local bazaars. Overnight at hotel.
Day 05 - Explore Jaipur
The Amber Palace, former administrative center of the Rajput Kingdom, is
your destination this morning. Follow in the footsteps of the Maharajas of
the past as you ride up the hill to the palace on brightly caparisoned
elephants. Inside are lavish courtyards, beautifully decorated halls and a
lovely Chamber of Mirrors. Back in Jaipur for the afternoon, you'll visit
the City Palace Museum, the lovely Palace of the Winds and Jantar Mantar,
an accurate observatory built in 1726. Overnight at hotel.
Day 06 - Fly to Bombay
The morning is free for you to explore the city on your own. Later, fly
to Bombay- now called Mumbai. Transfer to hotel. Rest day free for
leisure. Overnight at hotel.
Day 07 - Fly to Aurangabad - Excursion to Ajanta Caves
Today
fly to Aurangabad and drive to Ajanta Caves (100 kms / 3 hrs). Buddhist
monks spent centuries carving 29 caves into a horseshoe-shaped cliff on
the Waghora River. Completed around the 7th century A.D., these
masterpieces were lost for centuries until a British hunting party
stumbled upon them in 1819. Within the walls of these man made cave
sculptures and magnificently preserved frescoes offer a glimpse of the
religious fervor and epic tales that shaped the day. Scenes telling the
stories of Buddha throughout his life, conquering armies on elephant back,
princes and princesses, gods and goddesses give us a portrait of life
thousands of years ago that staggers the imagination. Return to Aurangabad
for the evening. Overnight at hotel. (Ajanta Caves closed on Mondays)
Day 08 - Explore the Ellora Caves
Drive to Ellora Caves (30 kms / 1 hr). Even more impressive than Ajanta
are the cave temples of Ellora , built between the fifth and eighth
centuries A.D. Stonecutters removed an estimated 200,000 tons of rock to
build the 34 caves that were carved out of the low hills. Sixteen of the
caves are dedicated to the Hindu religion, thirteen to Buddhism and five
to the Jain faith. Kailasa temple, dedicated to Shiva, is unquestionably
the most glorious achievement here. Transcending the earlier concept of
the cave temple hollowed out of a rock, the whole splendid structure of
Kailasa is an enormous monolithic rock carving in architectural form.
Overnight at hotel. (Ellora Caves closed on Tuesdays)

Day 09 - Aurangabad - Bombay
Morning visit the aurangabad caves, almost forgotten caves of Aurangabad
lie just outside the city. Excavated between the 2nd and 6th century AD,
they reflect tantric influences in their iconography and architectural
designs. In all there are nine caves which are mainly viharas
(monasteries). Later visit Daulatabad Fort : Once known as 'Devgiri', this
magnificent 12th century fortress stands on a hill just 13 km. from
Aurangabad. It was given the name Daulatabad, the 'city of fortune', by
Muhammad Tughlaq, Sultan of Delhi. Initially a Yadav stronghold, it passed
through the hands of several dynasties in the Deccan. One of the world's
best preserved fort of medieval times, surviving virtually unaltered,
Daulatabad yet displays the character that made it invincible. Evening
transfer to airport to connect flight for Mumbai.
Day 10 - Bombay
Today get to know the city of Bombay on a tour that starts at the Gate of
India that was erected to commemorate the landing of King George V and
Queen Mary in 1911. From here you'll board a launch for the trip to
Elephanta Island to see the 7th-century cave temples. Among the sculptures
here is the magnificent "Maheshmurti," or Hindu Trinity,
representing the three aspects of. Shiva -the Creator, the Preserver and
the Destroyer. Returning to Bombay, we see the Victorian Railway Station,
the Prince of Wales Museum and the Jehangir Art Gallery, the Hanging
Gardens of Malabar Hill and the Parsee Towers of Silence.
Evening transfer to Airport to connect flight for onward destination
(hotel checkout 12:00 hrs.)
