Cultural Tour In India

Places : Delhi - Neemrana - Jaipur - Agra - Gwalior - Delhi
Duration : 08 Nights / 09 Days

Day 1
Hoopoe bird at Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary Rajasthan IndiaFollowing your arrival at London Heathrow Terminal 4, we take British Airways' non-stop evening flight direct to Delhi.

Day 2
The midday arrival in Delhi allows us ample time to transfer by road - a 3 hour journey -to the Neemrana Fort Palace. The oldest and possibly finest of India's heritage hotels, the palace sits upon a rocky outcrop, a tranquil overnight location in which to relax and find your bearings.

Day 3
The morning is spent at leisure exploring your surroundings. Constructed in 1464 as a hill fort, Neemrana is a picturesque mixture of towering walls, palaces and balconies. After lunch we take the road (approx. 3 hrs) to Jaipur, a 2 night stay. Here in Rajasthan, pink is the colour of welcome. When Prince Albert, Victoria's consort, visited the city in 1853 it was painted pink in his honour and has remained in the pink ever since.

Day 4
The fortress bastion of Amber lies a few miles outside Jaipur, an ideal morning excursion past the elegant water palace on lake Man Sarovar. The ascent is steep but colourfully caparisoned elephants carry us effortlessly up to the fortress gates. Palaces, pavilions, halls and courtyards lie within its capacious walls. The views are superb. The afternoon will see us exploring Jaipur itself, the City Palace (still home to the Royal Family), the delightful (Hawa Mahal) Palace of the Winds, and the Jantar Mantar Observatory, constructed to measure 'the harmony of the heavens'.

Day 5
This morning we take the road to Agra, pausing awhile at Bharatpur bird sanctuary, and the Emperor Akbar's abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri, a capital example of Moghul architecture. Eventually Akbar moved to Agra which we too will reach towards the late afternoon for a 2 night stay.

Day 6
A day of wonder, spent visiting the eternal Taj Mahal, the Itmadud-Daula (the 'baby Taj') and the exquisite Agra Fort. From the latter, imprisoned in the Jasmine Tower, Shah Jehan whiled away his years gazing across the Yamuna River towards the Taj which he had built for his beloved wife Mumtaz. As a sobering footnote, the British Raj at one time came perilously close to dismantling the Taj and auctioning if off block by block.

Day 7

The morning finds us aboard the Shatabdi express for the 75 minute journey to Gwalior, famous for its virtually impregnable fortress, described by Emperor Babur about 1530 as 'the pearl amongst the fortresses of Hind'. We arrive well before lunch, spending the afternoon exploring this bastion. Situated nearly 300 feet above the surrounding plain, it is an epic achievement, containing gorgeous palaces, halls and temples within its ramparts. We continue to Delhi, by the evening Shatabdi Express.

Day 8
A full day's sightseeing in Delhi. The old city -bustling, packed, atmospheric -will

entertain us in the morning as we visit the Red Fort, the Jama Masjid and the bazaar of Chandni Chowk. The afternoon will be devoted to the wide avenues and broad vistas of the imperial vision of New Delhi, visiting the India Gate cenotaph and seeing Parliament House, the Secretariat building and the President's House. Late evening transfer to International Airport for the flight home.

Day 9
The day of departure. We return to London Heathrow just after midnight, scheduled to arrive in the early morning.
